表面上

January and May是“一月和五月”的意思

但事实上

它正确的意思是指

“老夫少妻”

更接地气的说法就是常说的“老牛吃嫩草”

a marriage or relationship between an older person and one considerably younger.

常与marriage和romance连用。

该典故源自英国作家乔叟所著的《坎特伯雷故事集》中“商人的故事”。

January 和May是该故事中的两个人的名字，前者是一位男爵，他在60岁时娶了一个如花似玉的名叫May的年轻姑娘，所以后人就用a case of January and May指“老夫娶少妻”。

来源于这同一个故事的还有一个短语：to have January chicks，这里的chicks当然不是指小鸡，而是指孩子。

January和May结婚后不久，May就有了孩子，所以to have January chicks意思为“老来得子”，你get到了吗？

月份的来历

在英语中，有四个数字月(9月至12月)，八个名称月。而这八个名称月又分别以三种方法命名：

第一种：采用古罗马、古希腊神话中神仙的名字为月名的有一、三、四、五、六月，这五个月：一月 (January)，双面门神伊阿诺斯(Janus)；March(三月)，战神玛斯(Mars)；April(四月)，爱与美的女神阿佛洛狄忒(Aphrodite)；May(五月)，护卫万物生长的女神 迈亚(Maius)；June(六月)，朱庇特的妻子朱诺(Juno)。

第二种：以恺撒和奥古斯都名字命名的July(七月)和 August(八月)。

第三种：用规范人们行为的拉丁词为月名——February(二月)，月份名称源自拉丁文februare(净化、赎罪)。在历史上，二月的下半月是古罗马芸芸众生祈祷、净化、赎罪，并用祭品表示自己悔罪。
